El Colmenar Cottage - Village facilitiesr charming and comfortable casita in Andalucia

Restaurants / Bars:

  • Meson Flores (N.B. Closed Thursdays) has a good restaurant especially for steaks or wild boar. You will need to make a reservation on Sunday lunchtimes as many people make a day trip to the village on Sundays.

  • Cani’s bar (N.B. Closed Mondays) not visible from main road –just tucked in around the corner after Maria’s shop. Sometimes has an umbrella set up to draw attention to it’s whereabouts. Cani’s is an excellent restaurant – behind the actual bar itself – not too visible at first – good place for local specialities. Again, reserve table on Sundays.

  • Bar Espana (N.B. Closed Wednesdays) is usually the one open latest. At weekends Bori, the manager, puts speakers outside also so you get music too! They do a very good three-course “Menu of the Day” at lunchtimes, for about 9 Euros.

  • Caserio Ananda (N.B.Closed Mon/Tue/Weds) New Argentinian style steak-house and pizza oven. In the beautifully restored old railway warehouse along from the station on the same side.

  • Dos Hermanos is visible in the village but currently closed.

  • Hotel Las Buitreras next to the church, has a good restaurant also – very reasonably priced and often with seasonal vegetables! (Not usually served regularly with Spanish food !)

  • La Cantina - open only in the summer months- is a wee bar at the end of the station platform that does whole chicken on a spit on Friday & Saturday nights – usually need to pre –order at 7.00pm-ish. Late night bar…and under a full moon… is charming!

Millennium Disco (Seeing is believing!!) Usually open late night until early a.m. only in the summer months or on special fiesta days. It is at the lower end of the village backing on to the school playing field.

Nekora Bar at the entrance to the village is often the very-very-late-night bar for the villagers also.

Swimming: The local "beach" is a grassed area on the village-side of the river next to a delightful, large, shallow pool. It is about ten minutes walk from the cottage at the lower end of the village. There are other deeper pools in the river at further distances away from the village or there is the weir about ten minutes away. The Gorge de Buitreras is a famed local natural landmark and has some deep river pools there too. This is a good 45 minute rough trek from the village. There is also a swimming pool at the local hotel three minutes walk from the cottage.

Doctor: at the daily clinic in the town offices. (Ayuntamiento)

Dentist: in Estepona on the coast. (Tel: Nick Dawes on 952 80 62 09)

Pharmacist: There is a very good one in the village. (Ask for the “Farmacia”)

Police: Their office is in the new Office building next to Meson Flores

Internet: Broadband is available at the office of Experience Group Spain next door to Bar Espana. There is also a small library upstairs in the Town Office building (Ayuntamiento) and they have two computers available there for public use.

Bakery: The bakery is on the other side of the palm-tree “plaza” in the corner of the  buildings with “PANADERIA” painted outside. All the little shops also sell bread. The bakery sells wonderful local honey in season.

                                                                         Nearby beehives.

Shops: Maria’s shop (“Comestibles”) is nearest, between Bar Espana and Meson Flores going towards Cani’s bar. This has just about everything from chicken to chilled beer. (You may have to ask for it as not everything is on display…so take a dictionary with you!) There is elsewhere, close to the Postal Agency, a hardware store (“Ferreteria”) and a Diego's mini-supermarket opposite that, which has a wider range of booze than Maria’s – see rough map kept in the cottage and/or ask for directions. There is also a "general store" shop selling household goods and knick-knacks etc. Various travelling salesmen arrive in the village selling fresh goods – they drive around blowing car horns loudly and then set up in the small market place next to the post office agency.

On most Mondays there is a small clothes market set up in the plaza. Sometimes there is also a dried-fruits-and nuts stall at the market that also sells fresh ground spices from Morocco.

On Fridays: Fresh Fish, Squid, shell fish etc cuttlefish.

On Tuesdays: Fruit & vegetables.

Bank: The UNICAJA bank is on the same side of the village as the cottage. It is directly opposite the rail crossing. You can change currency notes here or travellers’ cheques but the bank does not have an automated bank machine/ cash point. The nearest ATM to the village is inside the UNICAJA bank in Gaucin.

Post: There is a postal agency where the postman from Gaucin sets up office every day from 1100 -1200. The post-box is here with the mail collected daily. Go to “Dos Hermanos” restaurant corner and go down the small street alongside - away from main road, past the small market place stalls and to a T-junction. Turn left and the Post agency is on the left. Charity Postcards are on sale at the "Experience Group Spain" Estate Agents office next door to Bar Espana. Buy many please !

Petrol/Diesel: The nearest garage for fuel is at Gaucin. There is a mechanic in the village – Jose, garage on the road leading to the school. The nearest major mechanic garage is in San Pablo village at Garage “Talleres Gavira.” (0034 956 642 168) Also, try asking in the village for help e.g.  “Reinaldo” the JCB man, has lots of mechanical equipment and can tow cars etc if requested, for a reasonable fee.
